Andrew's column in West Sussex newspapers 7th April

As we approach the bank holiday weekend, I wish all my constituents a very happy Easter. This is a special time of year for Christians and I look forward to full churches after a number of years when parishioners have not been able to celebrate together due to the Covid pandemic. I also thank those who are working this Easter whether on the front line in the emergency services, as paid or unpaid carers or those working in the hospitality sector helping families to enjoy their time together.

This Easter, we also welcome special guests to West Sussex. Whilst I am aware of the difficulties that some have experienced with the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ – my office and I have been working daily with the Foreign Office and Home Office to progress cases and keep hosts and refugees updated – I am pleased that there are many success stories which are not always reported.

As of a week ago, across the four local councils of which I represent parts, there had already been more than 160 Ukraine visas issued. The number will have increased again since. I am proud of those local residents who are hosting. They are showing the best of British character – reminiscent of child evacuees being taken into countryside homes during the Blitz.

By reaching Easter, we are also reaching the start of the wedding season.
I am very pleased that outdoor weddings, of which I have been a strong advocate in parliament, will now be permitted permanently by the Government. This will provide a significant economic benefit to West Sussex as we have so many direct and indirect suppliers working in the wedding industry.

This decision will benefit local wedding venues and events businesses such as Cissbury Barn in Findon (pictured), support thousands of local jobs and unforgettable family moments as couples celebrate their union together outside in the fresh South Downs air and sunshine.
